Intro to Consumer Behaviour

Intro to Consumer Behaviour Date: Week 3, TuesdaySlides link: https://app.cleve.ai/share/jn79rannnrh27pkt9ypzkep22n8963n6 Source: redd francisco on Unsplash What is Consumer Behaviour? Consumer behaviour is the study of how individual customers, groups, or organizations select, buy, use, and dispose of ideas, goods, and services to satisfy their needs and wants. Key Factors Influencing Purchases Psychological Factors: Motivation (Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs) Perception Learning & beliefs Social Factors: Reference groups (family, friends, influencers) Social status & roles Cultural Factors: Culture and subculture Social class Personal Factors: Age and lifecycle stage Occupation & economic circumstances The Buyer Decision Process Need Recognition: Recognizing a problem or need (e.g., "My phone is broken"). Information Search: Looking for potential solutions (reading reviews, asking friends). Evaluation of Alternatives: Comparing different brands or models based on features/price. Purchase Decision: The actual act of buying the chosen product. Post-Purchase Behavior: Evaluating the purchase (satisfaction vs. buyer's remorse/cognitive dissonance). Purchase Involvement Levels Understanding how much thought a consumer puts into a purchase helps dictate the marketing strategy. Feature High-Involvement Low-Involvement Definition Purchases that are expensive, risky, or highly meaningful. Routine purchases with low risk or cost. Buyer Process Extensive information search & evaluation. Habitual buying behavior, minimal thought. Examples Cars, houses, laptops, university degrees. Groceries, toothpaste, fast food. Marketing Focus Detailed product information, personal selling. Brand awareness, visual packaging, sales promos. Customer Segmentation (Data Approach) Prof mentioned that modern marketing relies heavily on data. Here's a quick Python snippet using pandas that shows how we might segment customers based on their purchase history (useful for the upcoming analytics assignment!) import pandas as pd # Load customer purchase data df = pd.read_csv('customer_data.csv') # Group by Age and Income to find average spending segments = df.groupby(['Age_Group', 'Income_Bracket']).agg({ 'Total_Spent': 'mean', 'Purchase_Frequency': 'count' }).reset_index() # Filter for high-value segments high_value = segments[segments['Total_Spent'] > 5000] print(high_value.sort_values(by='Total_Spent', ascending=False)) Note to self: The midterm will definitely test the difference between psychological and social factors. Make sure to memorize Maslow's Hierarchy!

Starbucks Case Study Draft

Starbucks Case Study Draft Prompt: Analyze the marketing strategy of Starbucks using the 4Ps framework. Discuss how their approach to consumer behaviour has contributed to their brand loyalty. (Word count: ~800 words) Source: Fahmi Fakhrudin on Unsplash 1. Introduction Starbucks is not just a coffee company; it is an experience. By positioning itself as a "third place" between home and work, Starbucks has fundamentally altered consumer expectations of coffee shops. This essay analyzes Starbucks' success through the lens of the 4Ps (Product, Price, Place, Promotion) and explores the consumer behaviour psychology driving their immense brand loyalty. 2. The 4Ps Analysis Product Starbucks sells coffee, but its core product is the "Starbucks Experience." Core Value: Status, comfort, and a personalized experience. Actual Product: High-quality arabica coffee, seasonal drinks (e.g., Pumpkin Spice Latte), and a welcoming store environment. Augmented Product: Free Wi-Fi, friendly baristas who write names on cups, and the Starbucks Rewards program. Price Starbucks utilizes value-based pricing. They charge a premium for their products because consumers perceive the value of the "experience" as being worth more than the cost of a standard cup of coffee. This pricing strategy also elevates the brand's perceived quality, turning a regular beverage into a minor luxury or status symbol. Place (Distribution) Starbucks employs a dense distribution strategy, ensuring high visibility and convenience. They operate company-owned stores, licensed locations (like inside Target or airports), and even sell packaged goods in grocery stores. By saturating high-traffic areas, they capitalize on low-involvement, habitual buying behaviour. Promotion Rather than relying heavily on traditional mass advertising (TV commercials), Starbucks focuses on: Word-of-mouth and experiential marketing. The Starbucks Rewards app, which gamifies the purchasing experience. Seasonal exclusivity (FOMO marketing). 3. Consumer Behaviour & Brand Loyalty From a consumer behaviour perspective, Starbucks masterfully taps into both psychological and social factors. Psychologically, the brand creates a sense of belonging and routine. Socially, carrying a Starbucks cup signals a specific lifestyle and social status. Furthermore, their loyalty program uses operant conditioning, rewarding purchases with "Stars" to encourage repeat buying, effectively turning casual buyers into habitual consumers. 4. Conclusion [Need to write this part, summarize main points and maybe add a recommendation for future growth.] Try Asking Cleve: 𖥔 ݁ ˖. Write the conclusion for me, making sure to summarize the main points above and suggest a recommendation for future growth. To-do before submission: Write the conclusion Add 2-3 academic citations for value-based pricing Run through grammar check Verify word count
